History of New Year Greeting Cards

31 Dec

The earliest recorded New Year celebrations can be traced back to 2000 BCE in Mesopotamia. The concept was prevalent in most cultures in one way or the other but the common thought was to observe a day that marked the difference between Winter Solstice and Vernal Equinox. In most cases these festivities were closely linked to agricultural events. January 1 became the norm much later when the Gregorian calendar was introduced and accepted.

Speaking of the New Year greeting cards the first recorded mention of one can be traced back to ancient China. The ancient Egyptians and Chinese are known to have exchanged ‘good will messages’ on New Year through papyrus scrolls.

AS far as printed greeting cards are concerned, the Germans take credit. Woodcut prints were common in 1400’s. The printing and mechanization revolutions changed everything in the 1850’s. Greeting cards became affordable ways for sending personalized messages on occasions.

Companies like Marcus Ward & Co, Goodall and Charles Bennett started producing greeting cards on a large scale by the 1860’s. Naturally people resorted to buying these instead of presents. They were affordable options for expressing gratitude and good cheer towards fellowmen.

In fact companies that organize large scale events for employees and their families generally enlist the services of event management companies.

Though of course most organizations have able human resource and Administration departments that can well manage such events of their own accord; it is advisable to get an event management company to do the dirty job. After all official staff has their regular mandates and cannot possibly run around making large scale arrangements. A few things are an absolute must when organizing a corporate event: Christmas carnival games, food stalls and a stage for impromptu performances.

Event management organizations eat, sleep, dream and architect events – basically it’s a full time job for them. So it is a good idea to sub contract the job. Everything from planning, organizing, execution and management is done with perfect precision. What else do you need to make your corporate Christmas carnival a hit!

15 Dec

Let’s go back in time; as far back as the early 7th century when the legendary Saint Boniface traveled to Germany to spread the message of Christ. Besides several old wives tales that are associated with St. Boniface and his expedition, one story is very popular.

The great scholar used an upside down fir tree as a prop to explain the concept of Christianity to the common people. Over the years it became a custom to decorate and then hang these trees upside down from the ceiling during yuletide. The upside down Christmas tree  apparently was symbolic of the Holy Trinity – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Over the years people while moving on with times started erecting trees just as they are and decorated them with ornaments, fruits, candies, ornaments and fairy lights. Today of course people set up theme trees and what not!
Why not do something interesting this X Mas eve. Decorate the Ree with fairy lights and glitter and hang it upside down from the ceiling. Give your guests a surprise and something new to enjoy and talk about.
